New Mentoring Program Set at Jack Abrams STEM

A new mentoring program is set to get underway at Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School. Principal Donna Moro said one of its benefits is expected to be stronger connections and relationships between students and staff.

Ms. Moro is sold on the concept and value of mentoring. “Research shows positive outcomes from school-based mentoring programs, including improvement in both grades and attendance,” she said.

Additional reasons for developing the mentoring program include: • “It expands our social and emotional support for students,” Ms. Moro said. • It’s a rewarding experience for participating staff members.

School-based mentors do not serve as therapists or counselors; they are not the student’s friend; and they are not second parents to a student.

School-based mentors are caring guides; positive role models; wise advisors and professionals whose connection with a student can be a catalyst for positive change and growth.

Ms. Moro has stressed with her staff members that the qualities of an effective mentor include being a good listener and a caring individual; displaying a good sense of humor and patience; possessing a desire to make a difference in the life of a student and having an “open heart.”

The Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School principal has been answering all sorts of questions from interested staff members, including: What is the time commitment? What training is involved? How many mentors are needed? How are mentees chosen?

Staff members who are interested in participating have been asked to complete and submit a Google form to further along the process of getting the program up and running.
