New Opportunity for Girls Wrestling

Girls at Huntington High School will have an opportunity to wrestle as part of an initiative the Blue Devils are participating in with neighboring John H. Glenn, Harborfields, Walt Whitman and perhaps even Northport and Commack. The program will be offered at John H. Glenn during the winter season. Practices will be held several afternoons per week.

Huntington girls interested in participating in the wrestling initiative can stop in the athletic office and speak with department coordinator Mike Marinello or athletic director Jim Hoops or send them a message at either mmarinello@hufsd.edu or jhoops@hufsd.edu.

Huntington will send a coach with participating Blue Devil girls. Depending on the level of interest, several meets and tournaments will be scheduled.

Girls’ wrestling is growing in popularity. Several Long Island districts have established programs. A county tournament was even held last winter and a state level tournament is slated for January 2023. Newsday profiled the rapid growth of the sport and some of its emerging stars. It’s been catching on nationally and even internationally.

The athletic directors of Huntington High School, Harborfields, Walt Whitman and Elwood-John H. Glenn have been discussing developing a combined program to ensure there are enough workout partners and athletes to cover all the weight classes.

Superintendent James W. Polansky is spearheading the growth of the Blue Devil program. If interest exists, he believes students should be able to compete.
