Woodhull Post Card Challenge Makes Geography Fun

October 26, 2022

Allison Von Vange is always cooking up something fun for her students. The Woodhull Intermediate School fifth grade teacher’s class has recently been participating in the Post Card Challenge, striving to collect post cards from all 50 states and 195 countries around the world.

The fifth graders are using a map to track the origins of the post cards.

Students have been asking friends and family to mail cards to Woodhull School and having those same friends and family members ask even more friends and families to participate in the fun.

The fifth graders are using a map at the school to track their progress. They currently have post cards accounting for 44 states and 14 countries. You can follow their progress on the Instagram page @vvpostcardchallenge.

If you know anyone in a foreign country, please have them send a post card to: Ms. Von Vange’s Class; Woodhull School; 140 Woodhull Road; Huntington, NY 11743 USA

“I love going to the mailbox every day to see where the post cards are from,” Ms. Von Vange said. “I thought it was so unusual that we got cards from Japan and Australia before we got one from Vermont. My favorite cards are the ones from my former students.”

The fifth graders are just as excited as their teacher. “I think the post card challenge is great because everyone likes it and it helps us to learn geography,” Leo Boccuzi said. “I was also amazed to learn that the post cards were actually coming from those places.”

When you give it some thought, this is a good way to make learning about geography fun. “It is fun and cool and I am still waiting for my family to send cards from Michigan and Canada,” David Bergmann III said.

The initiative has energized Ms. Von Vange’s classroom even more than it usually is. “I think it’s going really well,” Charlotte Kindelmann said. “We are getting a lot of states and countries. I love to see who they are from and how they know Ms. Von Vange”
