Huntington School Board Adopts Goals for 2022/23

October 20, 2022

Huntington School Board members devoted portions of several recent public meetings to discussing and refining possible goals for the 2022/23 school year with district executives before approving a set of seven this past Monday night during a session in the Adam Spector Memorial Auditorium at Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School.

Trustees have been reviewing a draft set of goals for weeks, tweaking most of them to make them especially meaningful as Huntington UFSD and the rest of world emerges from the full effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The discussions played out before students, parents and employees. Trustees went back and forth with administrators on the best wording to use, ensuring a tight focus on what they hope to accomplish over the course of the current school year.

The full list of goals is as follows:

• With the emergence from pandemic-related restrictions, expand on the compilation and analysis of student data for the purpose of developing actionable items designed to address learning gaps and promote student growth and achievement on an individualized basis.

• Evaluate and address disparities among students and staff in terms of their social and emotional well-being, including helping to reestablish or build upon interpersonal connections throughout the district that may have been limited throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

• Engage in ongoing review and research related to district and school safety measures in an effort to prevent and remain prepared for unanticipated situations.

• With the emergence from pandemic-related restrictions, refocus attention on planning and implementing measures that promote comprehensive parent/guardian engagement and a welcoming environment in all district schools.

• Expand the district’s commitment to enhancing its culture of appreciation for the diverse nature of our school district community and its students through associated analysis and alignment of curriculum and instruction, recruiting and hiring practices, and professional development.

• In light of the current state of inflation and the potential for a fiscal cliff in the near term, develop budget priorities and fiscal monitoring practices in this context for next year and beyond.

• Begin to formulate a districtwide strategic plan that focuses on environmentally sustainable practices, including an educational program and opportunities for staff and students that promote an environmentally friendly mindset and practices.
