Finley Student Government Working Hard

October 17, 2022

The J. Taylor Finley Middle School Student Government Association is up and running with the executive officers team working hard to generate ideas and develop plans to make the school experience better for every seventh and eighth grader.

Finley teachers Keith Miller and Dana Rogan serve as the organization’s faculty advisors. The group is led by President Sena Knopf, Vice President Emma Mortensen, Treasurer Isaiah Bynum and Secretary Carleigh Camarata.

“The purpose of this organization shall be to assist the student body, the faculty and the administration of Finley Middle School to foster ideas of democracy and to develop the principles of responsibility, leadership, personal growth, self-discipline and good citizenship,” states the organization’s charter. “Through this we will aim to create an environment that fosters school spirit, school community participation, camaraderie among students and positive relationships between students and faculty.”

Finley Student Government Association officers have been elected by their classmates. The organization includes seventh and eighth grade student team representatives.

The group meets as often as necessary, but not less than once per month. It is charged with hosting “events that promote socialization, community and school spirit,” according to the charter.

Finley opened in September 1965 and the school’s first student government was formed within weeks. For nearly 60 years successive organizations have spearheaded a countless list of community service and school improvement projects along with sponsoring many annual social activities for students.
