Huntington Boys’ Cross Country Sprints to Finish Line
October 12, 2022
The Huntington boys’ cross country team is sprinting to the finish line of the season with continuing high hopes for success. In senior Matteo Armstrong, the Blue Devils has one of the best runners in the county, if not the state along with several other athletes who have been notching personal bests during meets and invitationals.
Armstrong won last Saturday’s Suffolk Officials Invitational at Sunken Meadow State Park, besting the field of 161 in a time of 17:08. “Matthew was in the top 15 for the first half mile of the race, then took the lead and never looked back,” Huntington head coach John Romano said. “Matthew ran great. He looked comfortable running and never had to really push himself. He set the pace for the whole race. He’s having an amazing year and over the next few weeks he’ll have an opportunity to compete in the state tournament, where he’ll be able to race against the best runners in the state
In other action at the Suffolk Officials Invitational, Huntington’s Ian Rotunno came in 38th place in a time of 19:26 with Ethan Goleski finishing 57th in 20:03. Justin Perez placed 103rd in a time of 21:54 with Michael Mendikyan finishing150th in 25:17.
Freshman Tyler Peck ran in his first race of the season at Sunken Meadow last Saturday. Competing in the freshman race, the teenager finished in 64th place in the field of 84.
The team has dual meets this week against Lindenhurst and Northport and one next week against Half Hollow Hills East. The divisional championships are set for October 25 with the state qualifier at Sunken Meadow slated for November 4.
