Huntington Senior Samuel James Thrives as a Performer
October 12, 2022
Samuel James continues to refine his craft and capture recognition as one of Huntington High School’s most gifted performers. The senior has really discovered his niche and he’s working hard to make the most of his talents.
Mr. James participated in the George Parks Drum Major Academy last summer. “I was sent there on behalf of our school’s marching band program to enhance my musical skills as well as my leadership skills in the realm of marching band,” he said.
The teenager also devoted time to the Long Island Musical Theatre Festival’s summer camp. “This camp was enriched with so many talented staff members and students alike, including South Huntington’s Steven Altinel and NYU Tisch Professor Nathan Brewer,” Mr. James said.
The senior is especially interested in the Advanced Placement English Literature & Composition and Theatre Arts classes on his schedule, which also includes Introduction to Statistics-Beacon program, Regents Physics, Chamber Choir, Senior Competitive Band and Economics.
“Considering that I want to study the arts and music, I believe literature and a solid foundation of acting is a necessity in that field,” Mr. James said. “Not to mention that the teachers of these courses, Kelly Quintero and Michael are phenomenal. Coupled with these courses and their respective teachers, I am so excited to be working closely with Mr. [Brian] Stellato, and the rest of the music department because I am this year’s Tri-M Music Honor Society president.
Mr. James is looking forward to participating in the high school’s jazz band with director Dr. Jason Giachetti and performing with the orchestra for the drama club’s spring musical production.
The senior plans to study music education and theatre arts in college. He’s interested in SUNY Fredonia, SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music, Hofstra University “and even a reach school such as Julliard,” he said.
“I’d say my high school experience has been amazing,” Mr. James said. “There has been many ups and downs, but I’ve always had people, whether it be friends, family or teachers to guide me along the way. I’m so excited to finish out my senior year and I couldn’t have asked for a better class to grow with.”
