Laurel Bonn Lifts Huntington Field Hockey

Senior Laurel Bonn’s two goals lifted the Huntington varsity field hockey team to an upset victory over Smithtown East on its home field this past Saturday, 2-0.

Bonn’s first half goal put the Blue Devils ahead to stay in the game. The senior added another in the second frame for insurance. Tessie Maerz had an assist in the game. Goalie Carlee Schultz was one against superb, recording nine saves with several stops simply spectacular. Smithtown East goalie Jenna Guerriere also played well, compiling eight saves.

“Today we put all the pieces together: passing, communicating, trusting each other, etc.,” said Bonn, who has tallied nine goals and four assists this season. “We knew that beating Smithtown East would be no easy feat, but we clearly dominated the game. I’m so proud of us.”

The victory improve Huntington’s record to 10-3 overall. Smithtown East fell to 10-2. The Blue Devils host Smithtown West today at 4 p.m. on the turf field.

Against Smithtown East, Huntington had to play flawlessly and it did. Defenders Erin Scanlon, Laura Curtin and Gemma Cartwright were all exceptional. “The girls did such a great job,” said Blue Devil head coach Kathleen Wright, who is assisted by Allison Conlon. “They really came together and came through.”

“We all clicked really well during the game and we were very solid,” Cartwright said. “Carlee had some great saves today as well.”

Schultz has been magnificent this fall as Huntington’s last line of defense. The senior is seeing the ball exquisitely well. The senior’s 76 saves are among the most in Suffolk.

“Today’s game was a challenge because even though we won, we have to do a better job on the possession,” said senior Grace Agrillo, who has notched five goals and two assists this fall. “We are playing well and have some things to work on, but overall, we are giving it everything we have.”
