Four Seniors Named National Merit Commended Students

October 6, 2022

Jonah Gillenwater, Brad Nisipeanu, Mikah Schueller and Nikolai Seferian are among the top seniors in the United States this year. The Huntington High School students have been named Commended Students by the National Merit Scholarship Corp.

The four Huntington scholars are among 34,000 seniors honored as Commended Students. They were recognized for their “exceptional academic promise.”

Commended Students placed among the top five percent of the 1.5 million students who entered the 2023 competition by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

“It is an amazing honor to be named for such a prestigious award,” Mr. Schueller said. “It is a testament to how hard I and the other National Merit Commend Students have worked over the years and I am extremely grateful to be representing Huntington High School in this manner. I wish all of the students who are taking the PSAT 11 this year the best of luck!”

All four of the exceptional Huntington seniors have compiled remarkable academic records, excelling in a long list of honors level and Advanced Placement classes. They have also been active in a variety of extracurricular activities from clubs and service organizations to varsity athletic teams and fine and performing arts groups.

“The young men and women being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” according to the National Merit Scholarship Corp. “These students represent a valuable national resource. Recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.”

NMSC, a not-for-profit organization that operates without government assistance, was established in 1955 specifically to conduct the annual National Merit Scholarship Program.
