Freshman Claire Parks’ Love for Science Grows

Claire Parks loves science. The Huntington High School freshman is rapidly earning a reputation as a hardworking and altogether wonderful all-around student with talents that run the gamut academically and extend into clubs and sports, too.

The teenager turned in a strong first quarter performance and she is especially shining in the high school’s science research course as she works closely with veteran teacher Deborah Beck. Ms. Parks has been participating in an experiment involving preservatives and spices.

The freshman’s interests lean toward the environmental field so her research is moving in that direction. She is sharpening her skills related to research, the compilation of a project and how to present her findings.

“I chose to take science research because science is one of my favorite topics to study,” Ms. Parks said. “I’m looking forward to learning more about advanced topics and the research process as a whole. I think there are many important skills that I can gain from this class to assist me throughout my high school career. Science has always been my favorite subject since I was a kid. Every time I walk into science class I’m instantly intrigued by the lessons. Science is all around us and learning about it helps us get a better understanding of our lives and everyday activities. I want the world to be a better place and I think science is a great way to connect us all.”

Ms. Parks is enrolled in many honors level courses and she’s also studying French. She volunteers with the high school’s Key Club chapter and participates in the debate club. She has applied to perform with the wind ensemble. The teenager played on the varsity tennis team and she plans to play on the new varsity girls’ golf team in the spring. She can play both the clarinet and piano.

“I’m enjoying the high school so far,” Ms. Parks said. “I’ve made many new friends and can’t wait to make more. All my teachers have been really helpful and kind.
