Huntington’s National Honor Society Adopts-a-Family

December 23, 2022

National Honor Society members at Huntington High School have mobilized for the holidays, raising funds for its annual Adopt-a-Family initiative.

Huntington’s Nathan Hale chapter of the National Honor Society is led by President Sarah Krisch along with Liam Tucker (vice president), Nikolai Seferian (secretary), Cecilia Kye (treasurer), Emma Hannigan (administrative assistant) and Haileigh Smith, who serves as the group’s tutoring coordinator. Teachers Patricia Avelli and Tara Rossy, who serve as the organization’s faculty advisors.

“Our main focus since the fall has been fundraising for our annual Adopt-a-Family event, which is when the National Honor Society gathers donated food from members and purchases holiday gifts for a family in Huntington,” Ms. Krisch said. Along with bake sales, we held a gingerbread contest after school on December 15, not only as a fun activity, but a way to bring the honor society and our fellow classmates together with a common goal to support a family in need.”

The success of the fundraising efforts allowed the organization to purchase gifts for three children ranging in age from six to 13.

“Our National Honor Society members further contributed by wrapping all of the presents after school on December 20,” Ms. Krisch. “Many members participated, enthusiastic to help with this cause. Overall, I am glad that I have been a part of it and am appreciative of all the support we had from our teachers and peers.”

The initiative drove home the point that there is something very special in giving during the holidays. “I think this event means so much to our honor society because it hits close to home,” Ms. Krisch said. “We know that the hard work we put into fundraising and organizing the food and gifts is going to benefit a family in our own district. I know that this event is impactful for the families receiving our donations, as it puts a smiles on faces that would have otherwise not have holiday presents or food on their tables.”
