Sophomore Gavin Deegan Starts Standing Out
December 21, 2022
Huntington High School sophomore Gavin Deegan has quietly started standing out among his classmates. He’s kind and compassionate and a wonderful athlete, playing on the Blue Devil swimming and lacrosse teams. He earns very good grades and is already thinking about possible careers.
“I have had many coaches and teachers that have changed me for the better; one of the first that comes to mind is Mr. [Michael] Corcoran,” Mr. Deegan said. “Mr. Corcoran has made a huge impact on me during my high school career so far. He has helped me succeed as an athlete and student. He pushes me to be a better lacrosse player and makes sure I am doing my best in the classroom as well.”
Mr. Deegan isn’t anywhere near deciding where he wants to attend college, “but I am hoping to take a medical or business major,” he said. “I look up to my father who is a physical therapist and I am thinking about following in his footsteps and becoming a physical therapist as well.”
The teenager said he is grateful to be recovered from a major injury and the setback that came with it last year. “Being able to do as much, and even more, as I could before my knee injury is a huge accomplishment for me,” Mr. Deegan said. “I have been very anxious to ski and snowboard again this winter after being restricted last season. I am looking forward to being 100 percent this lacrosse season after being injured in eighth and ninth grades.”
Mr. Deegan likes to help others who need it. He’s a good listener and his advice is always well considered. His classmates value his presence in their lives and they turn to him in times of crisis.
The sophomore intends to make this a great year by any measure. “I am looking forward to playing lacrosse and swimming, as well as contributing to the Natural Helpers club,” Mr. Deegan said. “I think our swim team will have a great season this year. We are contenders for the county championship. I am hoping to have a good lacrosse season, too.”
Mr. Deegan’s academic schedule includes classes in Advanced Placement Statistics, Honors Chemistry, Spanish 4, Business Law, Geometry, Global History and English 10. The sophomore is especially enjoying AP Statistics, Spanish 4 and Honors Chemistry.
“So far my time at Huntington High School has been very enjoyable,” Mr. Deegan said. “I’ve made many great memories at this school and with its programs.”
Mr. Deegan has traveled with his family on several interesting vacations. The trips have included visits to the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and some other destinations. He also stayed busy last summer playing lacrosse with most of his Blue Devil teammates.
“In 10 years I hope to have full confidence in my profession, whether it’s physical therapy, something business-related or maybe something completely unrelated to either of those things,” Mr. Deegan said.
