H-ton Robotics Shares STEM Love with Girl Scouts

December 9, 2022

Huntington High School robotics team members recently reached out into the community and spread their love for all things science, technology, engineering and math. The group worked with multiple Girl Scout troops covering a variety of topics, including how to code.

In collaboration with the Dragon Racers, a Lego robotics team comprised mostly of fifth and sixth graders, the Huntington Robotics members made their robots move through mazes, much to the delight of the Girl Scouts.

The Dragon Racers had robots that could sense surroundings. The Girl Scouts were tasked with programming the respective robots to “stop and go” depending on the color displayed.

Girl Scouts were presented with “Programming Robots” badge much to their delight.

Vincent Grassi is captain of this year’s team with Samantha McGloin serving as vice captain. Brian Romero is chief technology officer. Jordana Boxer is the secretary.

Founded in 2013, Huntington Robotics has advanced to the FIRST World Championships several times and captured many other honors and awards along the way.

FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) encourages young people to pursue careers in engineering and science by showing them how interesting and fun those fields can be. “Our mission is to show students of every age that science, technology and problem-solving are not only fun and rewarding, but are proven paths to successful careers and a bright future for us all,” states the FIRST website.

The team is for everyone, not just technological or engineering wizards. The program has so many aspects to it that those who might not even be scientifically or mathematically inclined can find a welcoming home on FIRST Team 5016, as the squad is officially known.
