Blue Devil Fall Athletes Capture State Scholar Honors
December 5, 2022
Ten fall season varsity athletic teams at Huntington High School have earned coveted New York State Public High School Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete Awards based on the grade point averages of respective team members.
Huntington’s football, girls’ swimming and diving, field hockey, girls’ cross country, boys’ cross country, golf, girls’ soccer, boys’ soccer, girls’ tennis and girls’ volleyball programs all captured state scholar athlete team awards. A total of 110 individual Blue Devil athletes recognized.
“I am so incredibly proud of our Blue Devil fall athletes for maintaining their priorities, successfully managing their time and for leaving it all in the classroom, as well as on the field,” Huntington Superintendent James W. Polansky said. “Their work ethic and commitment will surely lead to their continued success in high school and well beyond. Congratulations to them and to their families on the well-earned honors!”
To receive team recognition, the team’s average GPA for 75 percent of the roster must be equal to or greater than 90.00. Higher athlete GPAs can be used offset lower ones. However, only students with a 90 or above receive scholar athlete pins, even if a student with a lower GPA was used in the calculation. (Only high school student-athletes are eligible. Seventh and eighth graders participating on varsity teams are not included in the program.)
Two Huntington girls’ gymnasts qualified as state scholar athletes, although the team award went to Harborfields, who serves as the host high school for the combined program.
