Blue Devils Topple Centereach in Overtime, 15-14

October 7, 2022

The Huntington football team will look to win its second straight game when it hosts Smithtown East on Saturday at Blue Devil Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m.

Huntington battled through miscues, penalties and injuries to upend Centereach on its home field last Friday night, 15-14. Timmy McDonald scored what proved to be the winning touchdown when he stepped in for injured quarterback Anthony Annunziata and capped off a short drive by reaching the end zone after a 10 yard run that saw the sophomore break a series of tackles. Christopher Acompora-Miller expertly handled a high snap and held the ball as Peter Breingan split the uprights for the extra point, which was difference in the game.

Centereach took possession in overtime and promptly scored on an eight yard pass play. But Huntington’s Joe Algieri stopped the attempted two point conversion as Smithtown East went for the win, but came up just short.

Centereach took a first quarter lead when it blocked a Huntington punt and the ball went out of the end zone for a safety. Michael Kline scored Huntington’s first points on a 25 yard touchdown run. McDonald’s two point conversion run put the Blue Devils ahead, 8-2. Centereach tied the score in the fourth quarter to force overtime.

McDonald finished with 12 carries for 80 yards. Algieri recorded 12 tackles and a pair of sacks. Kline rushed for 30 yards on three carries.

Smithtown East comes into Saturday’s game with a 1-3 record after topping Copiague in the season opener, 57-6 and falling to Smithtown West (41-21), Centereach (7-6) and Connetquot (13-7).
