Blue Devil Volleyball Opens with Shutout Victories

The Blue Devil varsity girls’ volleyball team opened the season with shutout victories over Comsewogue and Amityville. Huntington cruised past both teams by identical 3-0 scores.

In the season opener played in the J. Taylor Finley Middle School gym, the Blue Devils bested visiting Comsewogue, 25-16, 25-18, 25-15 before a crowd of family and friends.

To put the statistics associated with the two victories into better perspective it is necessary to understand the terminology of volleyball:

• A dig is awarded when a defensive player successfully passes a ball that has been determined to be an attack by an opponent.
• A kill is awarded whenever an attack is unreturnable by the opposition and is a direct cause of the opponent not returning the ball.
• An ace is a serve that results directly to a point.

Huntington’s stats in the back-to-back wins were impressive. Against Comsewogue, Megan Donaghy led the Blue Devils with 13 kills, three digs and an ace. Kate Barba had eight kills and six digs and six aces. Lauren Donaghy added 26 assists, one kill, three digs and two aces.

The team effort included Brianna Borenstein’s one kill and one assist, two digs and four aces. Haileigh Smith added three kills and Renee McKeon had six kills. Lauren Gennarelli added a pair of aces.

The next day at Amityville, the Blue Devils once again ran down their opponents. Huntington won in consecutive sets, 25-8, 25-11 and 25-10.

Megan Donaghy played great with six kills, three digs and 12 aces. Lauren Donaghy was sensational with 19 assists eight aces and a block. Kate Barba’s contribution included eight digs, eight aces and three kills. Haileigh Smith had five kills and Brianna Borenstein added three kills and an ace. Neurdia Osias was on her game with two kills and a block. Renee McKeon had a kill and a block and Lauren Gennarelli notched an ace.

Blue Devil head coach Todd Donaghy and the players are pleased with the start of the year. “I think it’s going really well so far,” Smith said. “The team is working together nicely. I think with the two non-league wins we have built up some momentum going into the rest of the season so we feel confident playing alongside each other.”
