The Huntington High School girls’ tennis team celebrated a great season at the county awards dinner at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook. Seven Blue Devils captured awards. They were joined at the festive evening by their parents and head coach Jamie Fishlow.
Seventh grader Janita Files and freshman Mia Kaufman garnered All-County awards. Eighth grader Amanda Ganley, freshman Isabella Palacios and seniors Kate Balm and McKenna Buffa were recognized as All-League. Senior Anna Bell Young was Huntington’s Section XI Team Sportsmanship Award recipient.
Fishlow lavished praise on the seven players, who combined with the rest of the Blue Devil roster lifted Huntington to an 8-5 record against many of Suffolk’s toughest teams. For the first time in the program’s history, the Blue Devils advanced two players to the Section XI individual tournament championships.
Files compiled a 12-6 mark in No. 1 singles and Kaufman posted a 13-5-1 record. Ganley went 11-2 in No. 3 singles and Palacios was 9-7 in the No. 4 singles position. Balm and Buffa went 10-7 in No. 1 doubles.
Young returned from knee surgery to play well at No. 2 doubles. Even while sidelined and still rehabbing the teenager attended every practice and contributed in numerous ways to her teammates’ success.
The players, their parents and Coach Fishlow enjoyed spending time at the dinner together, recounting the season’s highlights and looking ahead to what the future might hold on and off the court.
