Dylan Schnitzer helped the Huntington High School baseball team break a decades long drought and win league and county titles last spring. While this year’s team struggled, the Blue Devil senior still put up impressive numbers and captured All-County honors. He plans to continue his career on the diamond at Trinity College in Connecticut.
Mr. Schnitzer said he owes his success “to staying consistent and being ambitious.” He added that working hard allowed him to realize many of his high school goals as he went about striving to be the best version of himself.
“I chose Trinity College to further both my academic and athletic career because of the amazing educational opportunities its provides along with a top tier athletic program,” Mr. Schnitzer said. “Throughout the recruiting process, I was searching for an institution that met my standards both in the classroom and on the field. Trinity stood out instantly because of its great liberal arts education and its success in the NESCAC [athletic conference.] My career interests lie mostly in finance and I plan on studying economics.”
The teenager has been inducted into Huntington’s National Honor Society, Math Honor Society and English Honor Society chapters. He was named a Distinguished Senior earlier this spring.
“Huntington has done such an amazing job at preparing me for college,” Mr. Schnitzer said. “I have been dealt with the challenge of many hard courses, including many Advanced Placement classes. These classes as well as others have pushed me to my academic potential and have benefited and prepared me for college classes. My teachers have also been very helpful and motivating throughout my four years and I am grateful for their passion.”
A member of the high school’s Habitat for Humanity chapter and its Key Club, Mr. Schnitzer understands the value of volunteering and he’s tried to do his part in helping make the community a better place.
“At Trinity, I plan on getting involved in the Hillel International network, which is an organization for the Jewish community and also in the college’s investment club,” Mr. Schnitzer said. “I am also interested in writing for the newspaper and participating in Greek life. But ultimately, I will be very busy with being on the baseball team.”
The senior batted .396 with nine extra base hits and 14 runs scored this spring. Mr. Schnitzer is versatile and can play several different positions.
The teenager has enjoyed many treks across the United States. “My family and I love traveling and I have been to over half the states as well as Mexico and Canada,” Mr. Schnitzer said. “My favorite place that I have visited was definitely Israel because of its amazing history and all the beautiful parts of the country. I went there for the Maccabi Games to represent the USA in baseball. We ended up taking the silver medal, but I had such a great experience.”
Mr. Schnitzer has earned top grades, which allowed him to gain acceptance to such a highly regarded college as Trinity. Being able to play baseball there is really the icing on the cake for the teenager. But, he will miss his hometown, which has meant so much to him.
“What makes Huntington special is how close our community is and how everyone is treated like family,” Mr. Schnitzer said. “We have all grown up together and have spent times with each other’s families. The close-knit community that Huntington offers is unlike anything. Being able to recognize faces everywhere you go and feeling comfortable with the people of the town is what makes it so special for me.”
Mr. Schnitzer is excited to be moving on with his life. He is ready for a new set of challenges in the classroom and on the baseball field.
“I have enjoyed every second of my time at Huntington. It has molded me into the person I am today and who I will be for my future. The atmosphere that Huntington creates for its students and teachers is so welcoming and it makes it easy to love being apart of.”
