Freshman Ludo Cattano won Huntington High School’s annual spelling bee following a spirited battle with senior Charlotte Cheshire, freshmen Devon St. John and Anne Tyrrell, sophomore Tyler Wheeler and senior Henry Stein.
Mr. Cattano captured first place after correctly spelling the word “pirouetted.” Huntington English teachers Victoria Geier and John Pagano served as the competition’s judges.

The spelling bee finals played out in the high school auditorium during a recent afternoon. The final rounds were closely contested. The event is The competition was closely contested.
The officers of Huntington’s Post Ellipsis chapter of the National English Honor Society spent weeks planning this year’s event. A preliminary spelling test was administered in English classes with the top scorers advancing to the finals in the auditorium. Dozens of students qualified for this year’s spelling bee contest finals.
The spelling bee was hosted by NEHS faculty advisors Aimee Antorino and Bonnie Guarino along with the organizations officers, Ally Kustera, Caelan Clayton, Anna Bell Young, Sarah Berry and Mary Grace Rorke.
The NEHS officers chose the words posed to contestants and created the sentences used in the competition itself. Students were allowed to attend the event during their free periods or lunch periods or if their respective teacher brought them down to the auditorium.
The final results saw Mr. Cattano capturing first place with Ms. Cheshire and Ms. St. John finishing second and third, respectively. Ms. Tyrrell placed fourth with Mr. Wheeler finishing fifth and Mr. Stein in sixth place.
