Seventh grade pitcher Gemma Bedell fanned nine batters and smacked a two-run double to lead the J. Taylor Finley Middle School softball team over West Hollow, 18-3.
Finley is enjoying a great season under first year coach Marissa Bergmann. The roster is filled with enthusiastic players who have improved by leaps and bounds. The wins are starting to become more frequent.
Against West Hollow, seventh grader Logan Miller belted a two run homerun in the first inning to get Finley going. But that was only the beginning of a big afternoon.
Seventh grader Amanda Ganley banged out a single and two doubles and drove in two runs. Seventh graders Isabella Holland and Joselyn Thorbourne and eighth graders Mia Miller, Odalys Salazer, Charlie Cassatto and Katie Cocoman all collected hits and drove in runs.
Seventh graders Sarah Benitez and Amanda Ganley and eighth graders Gabirela Genao, Angelina Hernandez and Emily Barba all displayed slick base running skills, scoring off of steals.
Seventh grader Gabriella LoScalzo and eighth graders Ashley Moreno, Angelina Hernandez and Gabriela Genao were slick in the outfield. Seventh graders Amanda Ganley, Logan Miller, Jocelyn Thorbourne and Isabella Holland were all sure-handed in the infield. Eighth grader Emily Barba was “excellent behind the plate,” Bergmann said.
Finley needed to be on top of its game to glide past West Hollow and the Blue Devils were. “It was an amazing team win,” Bergmann said.
