Seven of eight spring varsity athletic teams at Huntington High School have earned New York State Public High School Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete Awards based on the grade point averages of respective team members.
Huntington’s baseball, softball, girls’ lacrosse, boys’ lacrosse, boys’ tennis, girls’ track and field and Unified basketball teams all received state scholar athlete awards. There were 95 individual Blue Devil athletes recognized, too. All will receive state pins.
To receive team recognition, the squad’s average GPA for 75 percent of the roster must be equal to or greater than 90.00. Higher athlete GPAs can be used offset lower ones. However, only students with a 90 or above receive scholar athlete pins, even if a student with a lower GPA was used in the calculation.
“I am extraordinarily proud of our young people who take advantage of the opportunities offered to them while always prioritizing their academics,” Superintendent James W. Polansky said. “The sheer volume of scholar-athletes and scholar-athlete teams in Huntington speak to such efforts every season. Congratulations to our spring student-athletes and their families, as well as to their coaches!”
