Keeping kids excited about school and learning is always a goal at Washington Primary School, which recently hosted a virtual parents-as-reading-partners and science, technology, engineering and math night. Students were able to log into the event from the comfort of their homes.
“Students and family members shared in a cross-curricula experience as Washington’s ‘professors’ brought to life the magic of learning,” Principal Michelle Richards said..
The evening kicked off with greetings and an overview of the event by Dr. Richards. “Professor [Jeff] Dicker and Professor [Amy] Smoller facilitated the first session titled, ‘Spells in Prose,’” the principal said. “The students learned how to create spells using the Haiku style of poetry. Professor [Rebecca] Kraus taught us about magnetism during the ‘Whisk & Flick’ session. Students created their own wands using a string, magnet, paper clip and feather. To cap off the evening, Professor [Nicole] Lennon took us on a virtual field trip as we explored constellations in the night’s sky.”
The final segment proved to be awfully popular with everyone. “We explored constellations in real time in the sky above Huntington using Stellarium, an online star map,” Dr. Richards said. “Everyone went home with all of the materials needed for the event.”
The special evening was indeed popular with the Washington community as 74 families logged in and participated.
