It’s always nice to open a new season with a victory and that’s what the Huntington varsity boys’ tennis team did late last week. The Blue Devils traveled to North Babylon on a brisk March afternoon and served its way to a convincing 7-0 win.

Huntington is coached by Jamie Fishlow and captained by seniors William Weber, Sean Hassett, Matthew Minicozzi, Matthew Levinson.

The roster also includes freshmen Nicholas Plachta and Ryan Scanlon; sophomores Benjamin Edgar-McNerney, Tyler Godin, Lucas Spagnoletti and Eli Soric; and juniors Timothy Kusterbeck and Logan Toth.

The Blue Devils have upcoming home matches against Walt Whitman, Half Hollow Hills East, Kings Park, Hauppauge, Northport, West Islip, Deer Park, West Babylon and Bay Shore. Huntington has additional away contests at Harborfields, Half Hollow Hills West, Commack, Islip, Smithtown West and East Islip.

Huntington went 6-4 last spring when teams played a condensed schedule due to COVID-19. Hassett shined in singles as a junior, garnering All-League honors. Scanlon and Plachta came out of nowhere to go 10-0 in doubles play as eighth graders.

“Tennis is going well,” Weber said. “The team itself is looking solid. We have many underclassman on varsity, including two freshmen Ryan Scanlon and Nick Platcha, who both played varsity last year in eighth grade and are currently playing singles. We definitely have a better team than last year so it’ll be interesting to see how things turn out especially against the higher tier teams such as Harborfields and Commack.”

The Blue Devil junior varsity team will once again by coached by Robert Gilmor III. The squad plays its meets opposite the varsity. (If the varsity is home, the JV is away.)

The Huntington JV’s roster includes freshmen James Masler, Samuel Soric and Luka Zivkovic and sophomores Harris Alba, Jake Amend, Lars Galvin, Andrew Sullivan and Juan Vera Gamez.
