The Huntington Highsteppers drew a crowd to its spring clinic last Saturday in the high school’s Louis D. Giani Gymnasium. The three-hour event drew 30 participants, some as young as kindergarten.
The clinic was organized by Highsteppers advisor and coach Samantha Allen along with this year’s team of high school dancers. They all worked hard to develop a fun program and then promoted the event for weeks, attracting an exceptional level of interest.
The Highsteppers are well-known for their hip performances. The group is comprised of skilled dancers and talented performers.
Saturday’s clinic participants worked with the Highsteppers to learn all sorts of dance moves and even how to use pom-poms. It was interesting to see how quickly the youngsters learned all the ins and outs of competitive dancing and the different aspects of a Highstepper performance.
The year’s Highsteppers roster includes seniors Grace Colavecchio, Christina Drummings (captain), Naysa Escobar, Keira Francis, Victoria Mangan and Jillian LoTurco (captain); juniors Victoria Befumo (captain), Brooke Evans, Maria Sabatino and Sophia Thompson (captain); sophomores Adriana Abbatiello, Camilla D’Anna, Lea DeVoe, Ariana James, Kaitlyn Sansiviero and Ava Tizzio; and freshmen Rosie Arner and Alyssa Evans.
Participants were willing to try anything and they did. Many of the Highsteppers participated in the youth clinic, sharing their wealth of knowledge.
“The turnout was great,” Ms. Befumo said. “I’m so excited the team was able to get a head start on fundraising for next year. It was nice seeing so many people who have the same passion for dance as we do!”
The high school Highsteppers took delight in the three hour clinic. “It was extremely enjoyable and rewarding to work with younger kids,” Ms. LoTurco said. “They are all very talented and enthusiastic and the future looks very bright for the Huntington Highsteppers.”
