Laurel Bonn’s time has come. The Huntington High School junior is expected to be a key cog in the Blue Devil girls’ lacrosse machine when the team takes the field for its season opener against William Floyd on Wednesday at Blue Devil Stadium at 4 p.m.
Bonn is an exceptional athlete. She helped lead the Huntington field hockey team to 12 wins last fall; the most in program history and garnered All-County honors after the Blue Devils won its first playoff game in memory.
While Bonn is one of Suffolk’s finest on the field hockey field, she is an even better lacrosse player. It’s that talent that new Huntington head coach Shea Scully and assistant coaches Katie Reilly and Chris Taylor are counting on this spring.
“Laurel is a crucial asset to our defense,” Scully said. “To say she is a brick wall is an understatement. She is consistently working on her craft year round, which is apparent every time she steps on the field. She is not only determined to make herself better, but is constantly pushing her teammates to be the best that they can be.”
Bonn comes to practice every afternoon ready to play hard. “She is an athlete willing to go the extra mile when it comes to preparing for our season,” Shea said. “We are so excited to see what she will accomplish over the next two seasons.”
The teenager is equally gifted in the classroom and is one of the top students in Huntington’s Class of 2023. Bonn is on the high school’s high honor roll.
The Blue Devils scrimmaged at Wantagh last week. After hosting William Floyd on Wednesday, Huntington will play at Half Hollow Hills on Saturday at 2 p.m. Games against Sachem North and Farmingdale will follow next week.
“Just from our first scrimmage, I can tell that we will be a threat both offensively and defensively,” Bonn said. “We are all hard workers and I can’t wait to see how we perform this season!”
