Huntington High School Grandfriends club members and faculty advisors are an indefatigable group. Nothing stops them. They pursue their mission of lifting hearts with a passion that few can match.

A small but enthusiastic group of Grandfriends hosted a St. Patrick’s Day party at Sunrise Assisted Living in Huntington.

Huntington Grandfriends members are an exceptional group of young people.

The group included juniors Victoria Befumo, Markella Markotsis and Renee McKean and seniors Cassidy Casabono and Naysa Escobar. The teenagers, dressed in their best green, were accompanied to the Sunrise facility by Huntington High School teachers Suzi Biagi and Dr. Erica Murphy-Jessen. They joined residents there for several games of LUCKY bingo and a two crafting projects.

“The Grandfriends have been working with these local residents all year,” said Ms. Biagi, the club’s longtime faculty advisor said. “This was our third planned activity  with one more on the horizon. The pandemic changed how we do things this year. Social distancing, masking and isolation rules applied to every event we facilitated. The first was helping the seniors craft a personal shadow box for outside their doors. Caroling was next, along with a snowman craft scheduled for mid-December, unfortunately that morning Sunrise had to cancel, but the handmade adorable ‘snowmen’ wall/window hanging along with the sheet music were delivered to Sunrise nevertheless.”

Grandfriends participates in intergenerational events throughout the year with a focus on the senior citizen community. It would love to receive some support from the business community. Want to get involved? Send a message to Mrs. Biagi at sbiagi@hufsd.edu.
