J. Taylor Finley Middle School has been enveloped in world languages and cultures this week. It’s been a fun experience for everyone and a learning one, too.
To celebrate World Language Week 2022, world language teachers and seventh and eighth graders beautified the building with student-created positive messages in foreign languages including Spanish anti-bullying posters, positive mental health infographics in Italian, bilingual post it notes and even multilingual signs of “liberty” that decorated the Statue of Liberty near one of the main entrances.
Finley staff and students were surveyed on their cultural and linguistic backgrounds, which was represented on a “We Are the World” bulletin board near one of the main entrances, opposite the Statue of Liberty. Together, Finley speaks 20 languages and represents almost 50 different countries.
Throughout the week, students and staff continued to honor world languages with student-led morning announcements and the pledge in various languages, along with an impressive table display showcasing cultural artifacts and student work in Finley’s four studied languages: French, Italian, Latin, and Spanish.
Friday topped off the week with two “flash mob” Spanish dances in the Blue Zone, as well as cultural music during passing time that included Marc Anthony, Andrea Bocelli and Ghali, to name a few.
Finley had fun this week and came together to showcase the importance of world languages and cultures, as well as representation.
