Hunter Borenstein’s return to Huntington UFSD helped the Huntington High School boys’ basketball team undergo a renaissance with the Blue Devils winning 12 games, including a playoff contest against Newfield.
Borenstein transferred back to his home district after two years at St. Dominic High School in Oyster Bay. The teenager returned after Ken Parham was named Huntington’s head coach.
As one of the team’s five starting players, Borenstein turned in a great season. He scored in double figures in 13-of-21 games, including a season high 19 points and six assists against Half Hollow Hills East, which won the Suffolk championship and reached the Long Island finals.
Borenstein also tallied in double figures in rebounds six times, including a season best 13 against West Islip. The junior proved to be very tough under the boards on both ends of the court.
Borenstein shot 54 percent from two-point range, connecting on 74-of-137 attempts. He was 25-for-62 (40.3 percent) from beyond the three point arc. The teenager was a remarkable 22-of-26 (84.6 percent) at the free throw line.
In game after game, Borenstein repeatedly proved his worth. His season stats line was exceptional with 245 points, 145 rebounds, 29 assists, 16 steals and eight blocks.
Borenstein loves basketball. He plays as often as he can and trains seven days a week. The junior wears uniform No. 10 and he figures prominently in Parham’s plan for next winter.
The teenager is doing well academically, too. Borenstein is on Huntington’s Honor Roll.
