Huntington Athletes Garner State Scholar Awards

Huntington has nearly 100 state scholar athletes participating in the winter season.

March 1, 2022

Eight of ten winter varsity athletic teams at Huntington High School have earned New York State Public High School Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete Awards based on the grade point averages of respective team members.

Huntington’s bowling, Unified bowling, boys’ basketball, girls’ basketball, boys’ fencing, girls’ fencing, boys’ swimming and diving and girls’ winter track and field teams all received state scholar athlete awards. There were 97 individual Blue Devil athletes recognized, too. All will receive state pins.

To receive team recognition, the squad’s average GPA for 75 percent of the roster must be equal to or greater than 90.00. Higher individual GPAs can be used offset lower ones on a roster. However, only students with a 90 or above receive scholar athlete pins, even if a student with a lower GPA was used in the calculation.

“These young people are as well-rounded as they come and continue to prioritize the ‘student’ in ‘student-athlete,’” Superintendent James W. Polansky said. “Their efforts in the athletic realm are only surpassed by those in the classroom. We remain incredibly proud of them, their teams, their teachers and their coaches!”
