While last week’s loss at Northport hurt, the Huntington varsity boys’ lacrosse team is taking comfort in knowing it captured the program’s first playoff victory since 2013 and compiled an overall record of 12-5.
Coached by Julian Watts, Andrew Gutierrez and Patrick Reilly, the Blue Devils were one of Suffolk’s best teams. Eleven Huntington players garnered post-season honors.
“We had a special group of seniors who have been playing together since the youth level,” Watts said. “They led the way and set the expectations for this program. Their hard work and commitment helped steer us in the right direction.”
Robbie Smith, Aidan McNulty, Aidan Carrello and Anthony Annunziata were named to the All-County team. Chris Maichin, Liam Lennon, Ryan Porzio, Harrison Krywak, Sammy Mac Arner and Jahiem Hawkins earned All-Division honors. Timothy McDonald was named Rookie of the Year.
Smith (32 goals; 17 assists) and Maichin (29g; 16a) led the Blue Devil offense from their attack positions. McNulty (25g; 39a) and Lennon (33g; 14a) were exceptional at midfield.
“Aidan led the team with 64 points,” Watts said. “He was relentless playing both offense and defense.”
Huntington’s playoff win at home against Connetquot was the highlight of the season. The game took two days to finish after a major storm halted play at halftime.
“Next year, we return Anthony Annunziata (committed to Yale University), Aidan Carrello (committed to Georgetown University) and starting goalie Sammy Mac Arner,” Watts said. “We have some talented young players who will make an impact at the varsity level. We will still be ranked as a top four team in our league. Our focus will be on getting bigger, faster and stronger.”
