Like any good performer, the show must always go on for Huntington High School Class of 2022 member Ashley Genao. So the teenager dashed from a local youth soccer practice to the high school auditorium and sang a spirited version of The Star Spangled Banner for the crowd gathered at the 54th annual Blue Devil senior athletic awards ceremony.
An acclaimed vocalist, Ms. Genao played on the varsity soccer and basketball teams. She also sang prior to many varsity boys’ and girls’ games during all three sport seasons over the past four years.
President of the high school chamber and concert choirs, Ms. Genao also served as vice president of the Class of 2022. She was the music department’s student intern and a science lab assistant.
“A member of five separate academic honor societies, she has been on the high honor roll for the past four years,” master of ceremonies Michael Schwendemann told the crowd of Blue Devil athletes, coaches and parents. “A member of a variety of after school clubs, she has also played on the varsity soccer and basketball teams and starred on the county championship mock trial team. Her pursuits include the stage crew, a capella choir, jazz band, A World of Difference (AWOD) club and Grandfriends.”
Ms. Genao said her family has been her motivation to succeed. Their love and support, especially on her worst days, has lifted her up and helped her become the best version of herself.
The teenager volunteered at the Huntington Community First Aid Squad, while participating in clubs, playing sports and earning top grades.
She will be attending St. John’s University, where she intends to study political science and psychology with a minor in business. Her goal is to become an immigration lawyer and entrepreneur.
District Director of Athletics Jim Hoops presented Ms. Genao with a customized plaque honoring her as the Blue Devil’s Most Valuable Vocalist as the crowd roared its approval.
