Gian Marco Vazquez is busy laying plans for what he hopes will be a bright future filled with success and happiness. The Huntington High School senior has carefully discerned his interests and narrowed his college choices. While the next chapter of his life is slowly falling into place, the senior is enjoying his classes and competing with the Blue Devil fencing team.
While you can count Mr. Vazquez among those who aren’t particularly fond of the mask mandate that schools are required to enforce, the teenager said that “everything is going great” as his senior year moves on.

“One of the courses that has interested me this year is my Film/Short Story class,” Mr. Vazquez said. “I love watching films and getting to share my thoughts about them. I haven’t seen most of the films shown in class, therefore I think it is super enjoyable to branch out with different genres. Overall, it’s a very fun and interesting class to me. Mr. [John] Pagano has helped me so much with not only this class, but also my English 11 class last year. It has been great getting to work with him the past two years.”
The teenager just loves, loves, loves being a Blue Devil fencer. “I am a sabré on the team and it’s been such a fun experience,” Mr. Vazquez said. “Outside of school, I practice martial arts, which is something that I've done since I was five years old.”
Mr. Vazquez has been interested in fencing since his sophomore year. “Being in quarantine made me realize I wanted to be involved in the sport,” he said. “Therefore, during my junior year I joined the team and it became the best decision I’ve made throughout my whole high school career. Everyone on the team as well as the coaches has helped me so much. I look forward to finishing my last year on a strong note.”
The senior is interested in SUNY Purchase, Five Towns College and Suffolk County Community College. “I’m interested in studying performing arts,” Mr. Vazquez said. “I have always loved creating and acting on my own time so working in the film industry would be amazing.”
Mr. Vazquez’s academic experiences have given him insight into what he would like to do in the future. “Huntington gives you the opportunity to follow your passions,” he said. “For example, participating in the program at Wilson Tech, an opportunity provided by Huntington High School, has solidified what I want to do as a future career. I think students and the community alike should understand that everyone in Huntington wants to see you succeed and grow, which is something that is super special.”
As his days as a high school senior grow shorter and as the next chapter in his life inches closer, Mr. Vazquez took time to reflect. “My experience in Huntington has been great,” he said. “I’ve made so many memories and can’t wait to finish my last year strong.”
