The Blue Devil baseball team is fresh off its finest season in more than 60 years and everyone associated with the program hopes to keep the good times going.

The program’s coaches are putting out the welcome mat for new players in grades 7-12. Everyone is invited to tryout. Players are getting ready to begin working out and getting ready for a new season.

Huntington won its first league championship in 56 years and its first county title in 61 years last spring. It’s an experience that won’t soon be forgotten by those who lived through it.

It was a day to remember last June. Kyle Colleluori blasted a mammoth first inning three run homerun and pitched seven strong innings to lead Huntington over visiting Bay Shore, 7-4 before a crowd of more than 500.

There wasn’t the slightest doubt when Colleluori connected with a belt high fastball that the ball would land far beyond the leftfield fence. As the senior circled the bases with a homerun trot, Blue Devil fans went crazy.

Colleluori was simply masterful on the mound, throwing 19 first pitch strikes, walking one and striking out three as he mowed down Bay Shore’s powerful lineup. The teenager pitched out of several jams with near pinpoint control and scattered eight hits in a complete game victory.

Huntington never trailed in the game. Shortstop Chris Segretti went 3-for-3 with a double and a homerun. He scored three times, drove in two runs and walked. The senior’s homerun was his sixth of the spring.

The Blue Devils had 14 hits in the game, including three by Jaden Italiano and two each by Palmer O’Beirne and Dylan Schnitzer. Aidan Bender, Alex Gonzalez and Alex Bellissimo also had hits in the game.

Blue Devil coaches are already thinking about the next championship team. They want players who are committed to being the best and who love the game of baseball.
