Girls’ flag football intramurals begin today at Huntington High School. Sessions will run for about two weeks on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 2:45-3:45 p.m. on the grass or turf field or in the gymnasium, depending upon the weather.
Huntington High School girls enrolled in grades 9-12 are invited to participate in the intramural program. These school sponsored sessions will include general conditioning and training along with an opportunity to learn more about the sport of flag football.
Physical education teacher Christopher Taylor leads the girls' football intramurals.
Attendance at all the sessions is not required. Participants can attend when it is convenient for them. Huntington High School physical education teacher Christopher Taylor will oversee the intramural program.
Mr. Taylor has been a Huntington physical education teacher since September 1996. A graduate of Port Richmond High School in Staten Island, he obtained an undergraduate degree at CUNY-Queens College and a master’s degree at Hofstra University. He has coached high school football, lacrosse and bowling and middle school basketball, wrestling, volleyball and track and field.
While coaching serving as a varsity football head coach, Mr. Taylor’s team won the county and Long Island championship. “It’s very exciting to have a girls’ football program at Huntington,” he said. “So far, there appears to be a great deal of interest in it.”
Eight Suffolk high school are piloting a competitive flag football program for girls this spring. While Huntington isn’t one of the eight, the Blue Devils are interested in fielding a team should the NYSPHSAA and Section XI officially sponsor the sport and schedule games.
Flag football for girls is also being piloted in Nassau County and in the Buffalo area. New Jersey high schools have offered girls’ flag football for several years.
Huntington girls can speak with Mr. Taylor at the high school, send him a message to ctaylor@hufsd.edu or attend the first session.
