Blue Devil Girls’ Golf Players Seek Equipment

Interest in a potential Huntington girls' golf team is running high.

February 18, 2022

As Huntington High School gets set to establish the district’s first ever girls’ golf program, there is a need for clubs, balls, bags and related items for inexperienced players lacking their own gear.

Many community members have already reached out to golf coach Michael Marinello, who is working with more than 30 girls who are interested in playing for the Blue Devils.

Several weeks of intramurals are planned for the spring, including trips to a local driving range and putting green and the possibility of playing nine holes at a local town course.

Those in the community who have reached out have offered to donate unneeded clubs, bags and assorted golf related items for those just getting started in the sport. All items will be earmarked for donation to Huntington UFSD and will be listed on a future school board agenda for formal acceptance by the district.

There is a real need for lightly used gear since many girls are currently lacking equipment. They are interested in the sport, but don’t possess everything that a golfer needs.

The Huntington boys’ golf program has a very long history, but never before has there been a girls’ team. Some girls have played on the boys team. Superintendent James W. Polansky has helped spearhead creation of the new program.

Mr. Polansky said if there is enough interest, the district will include funding for an interscholastic team in the 2022/23 budget. Based on the response to the intramural program and meetings with individual and groups of students, interest is indeed running high. Girls’ golf is a spring sport in Section XI.

Do you have surplus and lightly used equipment and are you interested in helping the Blue Devils get a girls’ golf team off the ground? Send a message to Marinello at mmarinello@hufsd.edu or call 631.673.2017.
