Huntington UFSD is moving forward with plans for a varsity girls' golf team.

Huntington UFSD is continuing with its plans to develop a varsity level girls’ golf program. The next step is an intramural program this spring for students interested in joining the team.

The hope is for a Blue Devil girls’ golf team to compete interscholastically in the spring of 2023. The girls’ golf season is held in the spring across Long Island.

Huntington High School girls currently enrolled in grades 9-12 are invited to participate in the intramural golf program. These school sponsored sessions will include instruction and training along with an opportunity to learn more about the sport of golf.

The program will run Tuesday and Thursday from 2:30 – 3:15 p.m. at Huntington High School beginning April 5 and running through May 5.

Physical education teacher and varsity boys’ golf coach Michael Marinello is coordinating the intramural program, which will include trips to a local driving range and putting green and an opportunity to play nine holes on an area course.

Huntington High School has never had an interscholastic girls’ golf team. Superintendent James W. Polansky supports the new initiative and said if there is enough interest, the district is likely to include funding for the team in the 2022/23 budget currently under development.

Marinello said more than 30 girls have already reached out to him about the intramural program and the possibility of playing on a Blue Devil varsity girls’ golf team. Those interested can either seek him out in the athletic office or send a message to him at mmarinello@hufsd.edu.

The intramural golf program is expected to be fun for everyone. “Attendance at all sessions is not required,” Marinello said. “You can participate when it is convenient. We will explore golf swing fundamentals including the full swing, chipping, pitching and putting as individual interest dictates.”
