Liam Lennon had several choices to make and the decisive Huntington High School senior made them with confidence and determination. The teenager has committed to play lacrosse at SUNY Geneseo, one of the most highly regarded colleges in the state university system.
“I chose SUNY Geneseo because I just felt it has everything I am looking for,” Mr. Lennon said. “It has the combination of a great education and the opportunity for me to play a high level of lacrosse. I am looking to study business as well as my future career interests are business related.”
The senior has excelled while playing on the Blue Devil varsity soccer and lacrosse teams. He was a key contributor on last fall’s soccer team that reached the county finals for the first time in decades and is expected to be a key player on this spring lacrosse team.
“I feel like Huntington prepared me well for college between the college office, the accelerated classes that I took and the teachers following rubrics similar to college ones,” Mr. Lennon said. “I feel like I am very ready for college! I think I have learned to become very self-sufficient and can handle anything that comes my way.”
College lacrosse demands an extensive time commitment from players, but Mr. Lennon still hopes to possibly join some business related clubs at SUNY Geneseo.
“Some teachers that I have been the closest with are Mr. [Michael] Gavilan, Mrs. [Paige] Tyree and Mrs. [Sarah] Buchalter,” Mr. Lennon said. “I think that these have been the teachers that I became close to not only because of how good of a teacher I think they are, but also because they act like your friend. They don’t just teach; they also talk to you and make class fun. I think that’s the most important part of being a teacher; connecting with your students on more than just a student-teacher level.”
The teenager is involved in the high school’s National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society and Habitat for Humanity chapters. Mr. Lennon said that playing on the Huntington soccer team that reached the Suffolk finals was “amazing” and he hopes to do just as well in lacrosse this spring.
“I have done some traveling,” Mr. Lennon said. “I have been to quite a few different places and I would say my most favorite place in the world is Hawaii. I think I just enjoyed the way I felt there. I loved the weather, the scenery and just how beautiful it was.”
The senior is a strong student academically, earning a place on the high school’s High Honor Roll, which requires a minimum grade average of 95.
“What I think makes Huntington, Huntington is how different everyone is,” Mr. Lennon said. “Everyone is special in their own way, and not in a bad way. I feel like almost everyone is friends with one another and it just makes for an overall fun experience.”
Mr. Lennon intends to make his last five months at Huntington High School something special and he will surely do his part as the Blue Devil lacrosse team makes a run at the county title.
“I have loved my experience at Huntington,” Mr. Lennon said. “I have made memories that I will never forget with tons of people who I will never forget. I wouldn’t trade my time at Huntington for anything. I just hope I can keep making those memories with the same and new people at both Huntington and Geneseo.”
