Julio Martinez captured the 300m dash in an upset and Jahmar Francis came out of nowhere to win the 600m run to lift the Huntington High School boys’ track and field team to a runner –up finish at the Suffolk Indoor Large Schools Championships at Suffolk-West in Brentwood.
Martinez ran a season-best time of 35.38 seconds to win the 300m dash and boost Huntington’s team fortunes. He needed an all-out sprint in the final 100m to secure the surprise victory.
Francis emerged from the unseeded section of the race to also run a season best time of 1:25.66 to win the 600m run in a stunning upset.
Sophomore Johan Fajardo leaped 5-10 feet to place second in high jump and Nikolai Lulewich was ninth in the event with a season best height of 5-04 feet.
Junior Matthew Armstrong finished a strong third in the 1000m run in a time of 2:43.31. Martinez was fifth in long jump with a distance of 19-11 feet.
Martinez later teamed up with Christian Delgado, Andy Suazo and Francis to win the 4x200m relay in still another season best time of 1:34.87.
Huntington finished third in the 4x400m relay behind David Dje Bi, Kender Edouazin, Nikolai Seferian and Armstrong.
