Theadora Carnesi was happy after Tuesday night’s basketball game at Bellport. The Blue Devils enjoyed a big victory to inch closer to the league title. But as happy as the Huntington High School senior was, she was about to get a phone call that would make her dreams come true. The teenager will be attending the US Military Academy at West Point.
“I am reaching out to all of you to share amazing news that I received tonight from Congressman [Thomas] Suozzi,” wrote Ms. Carnesi in a message sent to a small group of faculty members who have been helping her during the nomination process.
“I have been appointed to the US Military Academy at West Point,” Ms. Carnesi wrote. “The call I received from Congressman Suozzi was surely memorable. It was right after my basketball game and I was able to share the news with my teammates and coaches. They all were so congratulatory and proud of me. It felt wonderful. I wanted to thank all of you for your endless support of me and my dreams.”
The teenager is president of Huntington’s Class of 2022. She plays on three varsity Blue Devil teams and is a highly recognizable and important figure around the high school.
“West Point has been my ultimate goal since freshman year,” Ms. Carnesi said. “I am so thankful for an extremely dedicated and caring faculty and administration at the high school. Huntington is truly like no other high school because of its kindhearted and committed teachers and administrators. I am so excited for the next four years.”
