The Huntington High School boys’ golf team is in the midst of preparations for its first match. Practices kicked off at 6:45 a.m. this past Monday at Sunken Meadow State Park.
The Blue Devils are coached by high school physical education teacher and department coordinator Michael Marinello. Huntington is coming off a league championship season last fall and hopes are once again running high for a successful campaign.
Bob Colvin is a volunteer assistant coach approved by the Huntington School Board. Together with Marinello, the two coaches work with the golfers to improve every aspect of their game.
Turning out for tryouts were eighth grader Graham Gooch; sophomores Anthony Addeo, Andrew Case, Gavin Deegan, Will Fallon, Chas Gadaire, Thomas Kline, James Larson, George Muegr, Jibreel Murtaza, Ryan Scanlon, Jake Severine, Harrison Uvena; juniors Thomas Girimonti, Declan Kehoe, Nicholas Sclafani, Cian Scott; seniors James Rosselli and Joseph Toscano.
The Blue Devils’ home course is the Huntington Crescent Club, which has rolled out the red carpet for the squad. “We are very appreciative for all the support and encouragement the Crescent Club has provided us with over the years,” Marinello said.
On inclement weather days the team utilizes two simulators in the high school’s corrective gym. There are also putting areas and other indoor training devices.
Marinello has developed one of Suffolk’s best programs that perennially challenges for league supremacy. He has sent several golfers to the state championship and the team has advanced to the county finals.
“We are excited about our 2022 team and hopeful that it will uphold the great tradition that we have here in Huntington,” Marinello said.
