It sure seems like just yesterday that Maria Sabatino pulled into Washington Primary School for her first day of kindergarten. Now here we are all these years later and the teenager is ready to begin what she expects to be a great senior year at Huntington High School.
Known around the building and throughout the community as a really sweet young woman, Ms. Sabatino is the type of person that tries to roll with the punches, not letting anything get her down for long.
“Over the summer I spent a lot of time with my family and friends,” Ms. Sabatino said. “I also spent a lot of time working and practicing for the Highstepping season.”
The teenager is one of the captains of the Huntington Highsteppers, the high school’s competitive dance team. She works hard to perfect her moves and she’s a great dancer and gymnast, strong and graceful.
Ms. Sabatino is looking forward to her final year at the high school. “This year I am taking Advanced Placement Psychology and I am really excited to learn a lot of new things,” she said. “Last year I took regular psychology and really enjoyed it.”
The incoming senior spends an enormous among of time training with the Highsteppers and the activity means an awful lot to Ms. Sabatino. “I’m looking forward to working with my Highstepping coach, Ms. [Samantha] Allen because she always pushing me to do my best and helps me improve a lot,” she said. “This year I am a senior captain for the Highsteppers and I am so excited to help my team improve in every aspect.”
Ms. Sabatino is focused on making every day be a good one. “Thankfully, my experience at the high school has been a good one, despite the fact that COVID-19 interrupted it,” she said. “I am entering my fourth year of being on the Huntington Highsteppers team and can’t wait for the season to begin.”
Like most seniors, Ms. Sabatino is giving thought to her future. “At the moment, I do not have a number one college in mind, but hopefully I will soon,” she said. “I plan on studying criminal justice in college because once I took the course in school, I found it very interesting and think I would do well in it.”
