The Huntington varsity field hockey team has many stars. The Blue Devils are coming off a 12-win season and are seeded No. 3 in Suffolk. One of the best and most essential players is goalkeeper Carlee Schultz.

Huntington’s lineup is stacked and includes many players who captured post-season awards last fall, including seniors Laurel Bonn and Grace Agrillo. Bonn was named to the All-County team and Agrillo was tapped as All-County honorable mention. Tessie Maerz and Erin Scanlon were both picked as All-Classification. Gemma Cartwright and Kaci McDonald captured All-Division recognition. Schultz and Laura Curtin were named All-Tournament. Stephanie Wickey was Huntington’s Unsung Hero Award recipient.

Bonn tallied nine goals and eight assists and Agrillo notched four goals and a pair of assists to pace Huntington. Maerz scored eight goals and assisted on nine others. McDonald scored 12 goals and assisted on a pair of others.

Scanlon returns as one of Huntington’s defensive stalwarts and she even assisted on two goals last fall. Curtin is spectacular on both offense and defense and rarely comes off the field for a break. She also assisted on two goals last year. Wickey is another defensive great, playing a key role in several games and tallying an assist last fall. She is currently rehabbing from an injury.

And then there’s Schultz. She recorded 73 saves as a junior. She was in the cage last October when the Blue Devils upset West Islip on its home field in the playoffs.

Schultz likes to stay loose. She has a great sense of humor with an ability to laugh even at herself. It’s that carefree personality that makes the senior so good in the cage. She doesn’t allow pressure to get to her. The teenager is tough as nails and despite her relatively small size for a high school field hockey goalie, she maintains her position even in the face of furious offensive assaults.

“Carlee is an extremely strong goalie and she is going to help us out a lot this year with all her great skills,” McDonald said.

Schultz is popular with her teammates. They depend on her to rise to any occasion and they’re fiercely loyal and even protective of the senior.

“I’m super excited for this season,” Schultz said. “Our team is getting stronger and stronger and I think we are ready to do really well this board.”
