Southdown Primary School first opened its doors in September 1954. Since then tens of thousands of students have moved through its classrooms. There’s always been a sense of excitement as a new school year approaches and this year is no different.
Located along Browns Road in Huntington, the Southdown campus was carved out of what once was a prominent Gold Coast estate totaling hundreds of acres. The remnants of that estate exist today at the nearby county park named Coindre Hall.
As more than 270 students spread across kindergarten through third grade make their way off buses and into the building on Tuesday, September 6 the youngsters will see many familiar faculty and staff faces along with some new ones to replace those who have moved on.
An excellent and well-rounded educational program awaits Southdown students. It is sure to delight all the youngsters.
The Southdown PTA has traditionally been a strong and supportive unit and this year’s edition is sure to do whatever it can to foster a sense of community among students and families and enhance the overall school experience.
“At Southdown, we are excited for our students to come back and experience air conditioning in their classrooms on those very warm days,” Principal Jill Armott-Erwig said. “We are also excited to introduce Dawn Marmo as a new teacher at Southdown. We are very excited to begin our in-person SPLASH assemblies again this year.”
Summer renovations have included the installation of ductless air conditioning units in all classrooms; electrical upgrades throughout the building; parking lot repairs including cracks filled, sealcoat application and re-striping; installation of a new modern sports floor in the gym and creation of an ADA compliant bathroom near the gym complete with new fixtures and tiles.
Southdown will hold a block party for families on Friday, September 9. The Southdown PTA will meet on Wednesday, September 21 with Meet the Teacher Night begin held that same evening.
As the countdown continues toward opening day, excitement continues to grow among Southdown family members.
