Huntington High School Class of 2022 member Sophia Lopez has garnered this year’s Joseph Toles Foundation scholarship in recognition of her outstanding all-around performance and potential for future success.
The $500 scholarship award was announced during Huntington’s senior scholarships and awards ceremony in the high school auditorium. Assistant Principal Jully Williams presented the scholarship to Ms. Lopez.
Founded in June 2005 by Joseph Toles, the foundation’s mission “is to provide, locate, refer and subsidize social skills development seminars, workshops, retreats and camping experiences to children, parents, guardians and professionals who work towards the development of individuals and families,” according to its website. The organization’s focus is on community service, leadership and organizational excellence.
Ms. Lopez plans to attend Delaware Valley University. “Sofia is a mature, responsible, hardworking young woman who is a favorite among her teachers,” said Bernadette Walsh, the high school’s college counselor. “She is an ardent learner and a witty, humorous and funny young lady. She has learned to laugh at herself and her mistakes and to take things in stride.”
The teenager has overcome significant adversity. Her mother passed away during Ms. Lopez’s junior year. “Sophia’s resilience in the face of tragedy is remarkable,” Mrs. Walsh said. “She has learned to seek resources and advocate for herself. In her unique way, she has made an impact on the learning environment of Huntington High School and our community at large.”
“The Joseph Toles Foundation envisions a day when children from all walks of life, all creeds and colors and all economic backgrounds are encouraged and nurtured to discover their own potential and individuality,” states the organization’s website. “The foundation sees children, parents, guardians and professionals working collaboratively toward family and personal growth that fosters cooperation, understanding, respect and trust in one another.”
