Huntington School Board members have approved a new Advanced Placement Spanish Literature & Culture course, which will debut at the high school during the 2022/23 school year.
The full year, one credit course is expected to have an annual registration of about 30 juniors and seniors. Prior to trustees taking final action, the district’s Subject Matter Council and the Educational Development Committee both reviewed and approved the course proposal.
“AP Spanish Literature & Culture uses a thematic approach to introduce students to representative texts (e.g., short stories, novels, poetry and essays) from Peninsular Spanish, Latin American and United States Latinx literature,” according to a course description. “The course aims to develop students’ critical reading and analytical writing skills in Spanish, make interdisciplinary connections and explore linguistic and cultural comparisons. The works are presented in chronological order to integrate the historical themes and literary movements of the different time periods.”
Course participants will “discuss the literary tests and their historical, socio-cultural and geopolitical contexts in various oral and written Spanish formats,” states the course description. “Students will analyze themes and features or artistic representations, audiovisual materials and audio sources in Spanish related to course content.”
Huntington High School currently offers AP Spanish Language & Culture to juniors. “We would like students to continue their Spanish studies in their twelfth grade year,” states the course rationale. “AP Spanish Language students would have the opportunity to continue in AP Spanish Literature.”
Trustees unanimously approved the new course. The district will now go about acquiring the necessary materials. Three days of curriculum writing and mapping will be scheduled for the summer.
Students interested in the course should make an appointment to speak with the guidance counselor.
