Seniors Shannon Kehoe and Jasjeet Kaur are a powerful research team at Huntington High School. The duo is among the shining stars in the science research program. Their project involves a study of “the effect of natural carbon materials and malic acid on Pisum sativum during drought.”
This year’s project is building off of work the research partners did as juniors. A new component that’s focused on super drought has been added to this year’s study.
The high-powered teenagers will be adding salt to the soil to cause a more “severe experience” for the plants.
While Ms. Kehoe and Ms. Kaur were generally happy with last year’s project and how it turned out, they wanted to engage in further drought related studies.
“Working on this over the course of two years has helped us better understand the overall topic and hopefully further confirm our results,” Ms. Kehoe said. “Our goal is to look for a cheap yet effective way to help plants during drought, in this case we are using pea plants.”
Ms. Kehoe has been recruited by Canisius College in Buffalo to play on its NCAA Division I women’s volleyball team. She hopes to work with athletes, play professionally and coach.
Ms. Kaur plans to study science at Stony Brook University in preparation for a career in medicine.
The two Huntington seniors have been mainstays in the high school’s science research program. Both are among the top members of the Class of 2022 academically.
“I have been taking this class since freshman year and I definitely would recommend it to anyone interested in research,” Ms. Kehoe said. “Not all projects are science related like ours, some lean more towards psychology.”
