Katie Browne scored four goals and added an assist and Regan Sansiviero tallied one goal and five assists to lift the Huntington girls’ lacrosse team over visiting Sachem East at Blue Devil Stadium on Monday, 13-7.

The Blue Devils were pushed throughout the game by Sachem East, which fielded many talented players. Huntington went into halftime with a 7-4 lead and then went on to outscore their foes in the second half, 6-3 to improve to 4-2 this spring.

Gianna Forte turned in another spectacular performance, scoring three goals. Gretel Cassell had two goals and Grace Agrillo, Bridget Callery and Jolie Weinschreider also scored in the game. Devon St. John had an assist. Goalie Ainsley Proctor recorded seven goals.

“I think that the team has been looking good,” said Forte, who has been dominating the draw control for Huntington and who already has 15 goals. “We are really starting to click as a unit and are getting better and better each day. We are playing good and are prepared as we enter a tough stretch in our schedule.”

Huntington is beginning to find its groove. “I think our offense is really starting to come together and our defense has been playing super strong,” said Sansiviero, who has 10 goals and 11 assists. “I think we can have a great rest of the season if we continue working hard and improving as a team.”

Head coach Shea Scully and assistant coaches Katie Reilly and Chris Taylor are thrilled with how the team developed since the first practice and the players are happy, too.

“Honestly, I’m super, super pleased with how it has turned out this far,” Cassell said. “The connection and relationships we have with the coaches so early into the season couldn’t be more strong. After coming back from eight goals down to almost a tie game against Commack, we really started to feel the connection. This team has a lot of talent and it’s starting to finally show! I know we’re all excited for the rest of the season! We seniors are going to be heartbroken when we leave.”

The Blue Devils will now play three consecutive games on the road, beginning on Wednesday when the team travels to Patchogue-Medford for a 5:15 p.m. start. Huntington plays a non-league game at Cold Spring Harbor next Monday at 10 a.m. before visiting Middle Country on Wednesday (April 20) for a 9 a.m. league contest.

“Lacrosse has been going great so far this season,” said Browne, who has notched 15 goals and seven assists so far. “Our team is comprised of such a great group of talented women with a significant amount of energy. We always hype each other up to win games. I see us going very far this season.”
