Gretel Cassell gives her teammates everything she has every time she steps on the field. Captain of the Huntington varsity girls’ lacrosse team, the senior is playing with determination and a sense of purpose, knowing that her time in a Blue Devil uniform is coming to a close.
Cassell has committed to play lacrosse next year at Binghamton University, but right now all of her attention is devoted to her Huntington teammates and helping the Blue Devils win as many games as possible.
The senior is a very good player. She works hard at practice sessions, but also devotes hours of her time training on her own and with her teammates outside of regular team activities.
A desire to be the best possible player is what motivates Cassell and she is an awfully good player. There’s nothing she can’t do on the field and her coaches need her to do all of it and more this spring. When the teenager aims her shot, it’s almost impossible to stop. Her defense is top-notch and her leadership is simply irreplaceable.
“Gretel has not only proven to be a huge asset to our defense, but also our midfield,” Blue Devil head coach Shea Scully said. “Her knowledge of the field and sport is extremely broad. She is quick and aggressive on the draw, creating many opportunities for our team to advance the ball up the field. Gretel is a born leader who always makes it a point to take her teammates under her wing. We are extremely proud of her.”
As Huntington heads into the heart of its season, the team knows it is going nowhere without Cassell’s heroics.
