Katie Browne scored three times and Kayleigh Bender and Gretel Cassell had two goals each, but it wasn’t enough as William Floyd topped Huntington in the season opener for the Blue Devil girls’ lacrosse team, 11-8.
The Colonials appeared to be in mid-season form while Huntington was still trying to find its footing with an entirely new coaching staff. It was William Floyd’s third straight victory after having captured early wins in non-league games.
Huntington head coach Shea Scully and assistants Katie Reilly and Chris Taylor believe the Blue Devils will be just fine and win their fair share of games as the teams gels over the coming two weeks.
William Floyd staked out an 8-4 first half lead and Huntington was never able to overcome the deficit. The Blue Devils outscored the visitors in the second frame, 4-3, but it wasn’t nearly enough.
Devon St. John also scored for Huntington. Bender and Regan Sansiviero added assists.
The Blue Devils have a mix of veterans and first year varsity players. With the weather both frigid and wet over the opening weeks, Huntington’s practices have been disrupted by having to move indoors several times. That’s prevented the team from syncing.
With William Floyd controlling a large majority of face-offs, Huntington struggled to take the offensive in the game.
The Blue Devils will seek to right the ship on Saturday when they travel to Half Hollow Hills for a 2 p.m. game. Huntington plays at Commack on Tuesday (April 5) at 5:15 p.m. before hosting home games on Thursday (April 7) against Sachem North at 4 p.m. and on Saturday (April 9) against Farmingdale at 10 a.m.
