Huntington High School art students and teachers are participating in a heartwarming project, lovingly creating Veterans Day cards for residents at the Long Island State Veterans Home in Stony Brook.

Teachers Kristin Singer, Jenna Rinaldi and Kim Valerio worked with their students to create colorful cards for more than 100 Americans who have done so much for their country.

The Huntington student artists are participating in a program sponsored by Cona Elder Law in Melville. The colorful handmade cards are sure to be a hit with the veterans.

The Huntington students made more than 100 cards, with 60 of them coming from Ms. Valerio’s Fashion & Illustration Design and Creative Crafts students alone.

The students used their creativity to make the cards from a variety of materials, including decorative papers, buttons, ribbons, sequins, beads and more,” Ms. Valerio said.

The cards will be distributed to the veterans residing at the LI State Veterans Home as a way of thanking them for their service to the nation.

“The Long Island State Veterans Home opened its doors to its first residents on October 25, 1991, after more than twelve years of intensive planning and building,” according to its website. “Located on the Gold Coast of Long Island, on the campus of Stony Brook University, the Veterans Home is a 350-bed skilled nursing facility that provides round-the-clock nursing and sub-acute care to veterans of the United States armed forces. Its mission is twofold. First, to provide the highest quality and most comprehensive health care services to Long Islands veterans, and second, to serve as a model site for research, and the education and training of tomorrows long-term care and geriatric professionals.”

A major teaching affiliate of Stony Brook Medicine, the LI State Veterans Home continues to be one of the only nursing homes in the U.S. that is fully integrated into the health and educational mission of a major teaching and research university. This affiliation enables it to offer Long Island’s veterans access to the New York metropolitan region’s best health care professionals and most advanced medical technology.
